Understanding the Swat and Taliban using Anthropology

Since the Taliban and Swat are in a massive battle for control of Pakistan it becomes important to learn more about both cultures. A recent interview with Gustaaf Houtman in the new issue of Anthropology Today, looks at the latest developments among the Swat. “Swat was an anthropologist’s paradise waiting to be discovered when Fredrik Barth first went there to conduct fieldwork in the 1950s”, he says. “It was a remote, tiny and scenic state up in the foothills of the Himalayas in north Pakistan”.
